Parenting: 20 Ways to Enjoy Fall with Family
By: LaToya Smith

Fall is one of my favorite seasons! The smell of the air just seems different. The delightful sights of pumpkins, acorns, and brightly colored leaves. The pleasant aroma of cinnamon, comfort foods, scarves, boots, and the start of Fall TV. It’s a memory-making season. A tradition-keeping season. This is the perfect time to be intentional as a family. There are many ways to enjoy fall with your family, outside of watching football and your occasional favorite TV show indulgences like Scandal, Parenthood, and SVU.

Here are 20 ways to enjoy fall with your family!

  1. Sip a pumpkin spice latte. (Are you as excited as I am about the availability of this seasonal beverage?! Did you know that it’s Starbuck’s most popular seasonal item ever?)
  2. Visit a Pumpkin Patch – Visit a pumpkin patch and have each family member pick up a pumpkin to decorate or carve.  We love finding new ones every year. It creates a fun tradition!
  3. Watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
  4. Go on a Hayride – Who doesn’t love a hayride?  You can usually find them on small and large farms in your area.
  5. Horseback Riding. Little pony rides are usually available at pumpkin patches. However, a real horseback ride would be awesome for your family to experience together.

6. Go to a football game. --High school, College, or Professional can be an exciting experience!

7. Bake- Apple pie… or Pumpkin pie–whichever! Just make a real pie. Or cinnamon rolls.  Or even make homemade Applesauce with fresh picked apples. Yum!
8. Go to a Fall Festival or the County Fair.
9. Have a bonfire. Light up the fire pit and grill hot dogs or s’mores. Or just sit around one for warmth and great story telling!

10. Fun Fall Craft – Pinterest is inundated with crafts for the fall time. Just do a search for fall crafts and you should find some great ideas!
11. Count shooting stars.
12. Read a good book.
The weather usually isn’t too cool and yet it is not too hot either!  Fall usually brings some wonderful days to get outside!

. Make Caramel Apples – We love to make candy apples!  Here is a simple recipe: Remove the stem from each apple and press a craft stick into the top. Butter a baking sheet. Place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave 2 minutes, stirring once. Allow to cool briefly. Roll each apple quickly in caramel sauce until well coated. Place on prepared sheet to set.

14. Have a Fall Picnic – Pack a lunch for the family and have a picnic under a tree in a beautiful park amongst a beautiful autumn setting.  The weather usually isn’t too cool and yet it is not too hot either!  Fall usually brings some wonderful days to get outside!

15. Drink apple cider.
16. Have Fun with the Leaves – I have so many fond memories of jumping in leave piles. Let your kids do the same! It’s just good old fashioned fun!

17. Have a Movie Night –  Movie nights are always fun, but there is just something extra special about them in the fall time!  The idea of cuddling with warm blankets and a fire in the fireplace or a fall snack is just a wonderful way to enjoy home life! Snuggle under a blanket with a loved one.
18. Make a delicious Fall Trail Mix – Work together to select the various elements to capture fall’s best flavors, throw it all in, and mix.  Fun for all! Our favorite fall mix is: Caramel Bits, Fall Candy Corn, Peanuts, Brown Sugar Quaker Squares, Fall M&M’s, Dehydrated Apples, Peanut Butter Chips, and Life Cereal.
19. Take a Fall Photo Together -The fall can be a wonderful time to take family photos.  It’s also a perfect time to prepare for Christmas cards. The splendor of autumn and fall foliage can offer a beautiful and scenic background.
20.
Make a “Thankful Tree” or Gratitude Activity Jar — as a reminder to cultivate gratitude, introduce kids to various ways of giving back to their community, and countdown the days until Thanksgiving. It’s a wonderful way to help your family learn to be more grateful for all they have!
