Hot Topic: Secret Spending
We hear couples (individually) say all the time, "I will keep this one purchase my little secret he/she doesn't need to know about it." Sometimes it may seem normal to hide certain purchases and expenses from a spouse. But this is only good for those times you are hiding a gift from your spouse which you plan to reveal later. You should never hide purchases or expenses in hopes your spouse never find out, that is called secret spending.
Secret spending can destroy a marriage, it's almost as bad as infidelity. LWR shares a few helpful tips and clues to help you find out if your spouse is a secret spender. We want you to keep your eyes open and alert to what is going on with your finances.
One of the best things we can do financially is to align our mind set to the biblical perspective.
Clue #1: Taking Control - Your spouse insists on having all the control over all the finances, this could be a clue that your spouse maybe hiding something.
Clue #2: Bounce Checks - Your spending habits and payroll checks are consistent, but checks are bouncing left and right you may want look into how your spouse is handling the finances.
Clue #3: No Bank Statements - Secret spenders will always try and hide their spending habits. If you've never seen a bank statement and you know there is a bank account open, this could be another clue that your spouse is hiding something. Contact the bank and get copies emailed to yourself.
Clue #4: Gifts for Friends - Secret spenders will usually purchase items and say the items are gifts for their friends. If the gift giving becomes excessive this could be a clue that your spouse is a secret spender.
The suggested clues are to help identify if your spouse is a secret spender. If you truly love your spouse sit down and have a open conversation about the finances. You need to get down to the source of the problem. Excessive Shopping is an addiction and your spouse may need professional help.
