Not-So Traditional Date Night

What is date night? Or a better question might be, how do you define your perfect date night? I would say the definition for us, and maybe many of you, traditionally involves a couple spending time together alone reconnecting with each other over dinner or with other couples, cooking dinner with each other or having a cocktail or mock-tail on the patio or wherever. But sometimes date nights are interrupted or don’t always go as planned.
My husband travels for work often, so we try to squeeze in quality time with each other whenever we can. The one weekend I thought we would be able to get that quality time was interrupted by trips to Home Depot, Lowes, debating paint choices, interviewing contractors, searching for carpet cleaning companies and (for my husband) mowing and trimming grass at a home where we don't reside.
I had totally forgotten the family who was renting our rental property was moving out this particular weekend and we needed to make a mad dash to get the house primped and primed for the next family. Although most of the weekend was tied up with cleaning and repair, it turned out to be quality time alone. There were some decisions that needed to be made quickly so we had to really work together and communicate to get things moving. There were some stressful moments; one in particular was when it came to making a final decision on the floors… too many choices, what is a girl to do?! I know my husband had to be patient with me…THANK YOU HONEY!
This wasn’t the traditional date night but it was good spending time with my husband outside of our normal routine. I always learn something new about him when we work on these kind of projects. Now don’t get me wrong, I like the traditional date nights we usually have and I am looking forward to our next one. But it is always good to take advantage of any time you can get with your spouse regardless if it's dinner and a movie or paint brushes and a hammer.
Try doing something outside of the traditional date night like home improvement projects, running /walking a marathon, or volunteering. You may learn something new about your spouse and yourself.
