Design Outside the Lines with R J Clifton Designs
Dorm Room Edition

By: Rhonnika Clifton, Certified Interior Designer
Senior class trip…done. Prom…done. Now, it’s time for the next big challenge…decorating your college dorm room! Embarking on the journey of starting at a new school and moving away from home can be hard on both parents and students, but decorating and personalizing their dorm room can be fun and a great way to put everyone’s nerves at ease. Here are three tips to make your dorm room the talk of the campus.

Tip #1: Space Plan

The furniture pieces in many dorm rooms are stationary, but if you are lucky enough to be able to move your core pieces (bed, desk, storage etc.) around then do so. After all, you’ll more than likely live in the same room for the entire school year! By doing so, you’ll be able to maximize your space to create a cozy seating area using large poufs, colorful Flor carpet tiles and a multi-functional end table.

Tip #2- Customize Your Bedding

Why buy one of those cheap bed-in-a-bags when you can step on campus with custom, unique bedding?! For a little extra money, head to your local fabric store and pick out 6-8 yards of your favorite fabric (don’t forget to look in the sale/clearance section) and batting (the cushy part used in the middle of a comforter). If you also want to have a pillow sham, pull an extra 1- 1/2 yards in the comforter fabric or a coordinating color/pattern. Take your materials to your local seamstress/tailor to have your bedding sewn or contact a designer, such as Rhonnika Clifton of R J Clifton Designs, to source a qualified workshop.

Tip #3-Stop & Smell the roses...not dorm room funk!

Sure, you can have your college dorm room beautifully decorated with some pretty cool items, but they can't cover up bad scents. If you have sports equipment, dirty laundry, or leftover pizza in your dorm trash can, you'll want to cover those scents with something that smells better than whatever is brewing in your dorm room. Use items such as reed diffusers, room sprays, gel beads and scented LED candles, like the Sea Air scent from Pier 1, to keep your room smelling fresh. Your nose and roommate will thank you!
