Special Feature: Why Fathers Matter
Although Father's Day was in June, I wanted to take time to pay homage not only to my husband, who I think is an amazing father, but to all of the fathers who make time and take time to help raise their children. Some fathers are even raising their children as a single parent but rarely do they get any glory or spotlight.
Most of the time you hear negative stories about men not paying child support or fathering multiple children with multiple women. But I do believe there are more responsible fathers out there and they deserve to be recognized not only on Father's Day but everyday for their hard work and commitment to keeping their families together and supporting their children not only financially but emotionally as well. A child's relationship with their father is crucial to their well being and emotional development. Children learn how to form relationships based on the role their father has in their lives. They feel loved and accepted when they have that connection to daddy and it makes them more confident. Studies have also shown that children learn their communication skills from their father. Most father's avoid baby talk, they communicate in a direct manner using words that the children might not always understand, but the tone of their voices engage children (and sometimes can be used as a disciplinary tool) and they tend to listen when daddy talks. Fathers also teach their children to be fearless. Fathers are superhero archetype's. To children they are invincible. They are strong and powerful and when they feel loved by this man, they too feel invincible. So, regardless to your status (married or single) if you are a mother it is critical that you encourage and support your child's relationship with their father. If you are a father, let nothing and no one stand in your way of helping to nurture your child and give them the things that only you as a father can give. Support them, love them, be their dad. They need you. ---TM |
